Family And Community Engagement

Family And Community Engagement

Family And Community Engagement begins with a simple premise: learning does not start or end at the classroom door. In this workshop, I invite educators, caregivers, and community partners to look at themselves as co‑authors of the learning culture that children move through each day.

We start by naming the realities of 21st‑century life: multiple jobs, shifting neighborhoods, constant digital connectivity, and the quiet worry many adults carry about "keeping up." Through guided reflection, participants trace how their own schooling, family histories, and beliefs about success shape the expectations they bring to young people.

From there, I introduce accessible ways to bridge home wisdom and school expectations, especially around technology. Drawing on the companion session "My Kid Is On Their Phone, Again! Shifting Perceptions on 21st Century Communication," we unpack what adults see when a child is on a device, and what the child might be experiencing - connection, escape, learning, or all three. Together we develop language and agreements that honor both boundaries and the realities of digital communication.

Throughout the workshop, families and educators practice concrete strategies: co‑creating simple home learning rituals, designing questions that deepen conversation about online life, and identifying moments when text, video, or audio can be used for shared learning rather than isolation. I offer frameworks from social justice education to help participants notice how access, race, language, and class shape what is possible for different households.

By the close, participants leave with:

- An expanded understanding of what "engagement" can mean beyond attendance at events.
- Tools to turn everyday interactions - including device use - into openings for connection and curiosity.
- A renewed sense that each adult around a child carries a piece of the learning story, and that those pieces are stronger when held together.
